About this edition

Sun Tzu’s text is short enough to read in an evening and deep enough to re-read for a lifetime. This edition keeps the thirteen chapters whole, sets each on its own spread, and adds a one-paragraph summary at the head of every chapter so the argument can be followed at a glance.

About the author

Sun Tzu

c. 544–496 BC · State of Qi, China; served the state of Wu

A general of the state of Wu in the late sixth century BC, by tradition the author of the thirteen chapters that bear his name. Little is known of his life beyond Sima Qian’s account, written four centuries later. The text itself is the evidence: terse, practical, and concerned above all with winning before the battle begins.
